Organic Cleansers are a Good Choice for Your Home

Did you know that one of the most common sources of exposure to dangerous chemicals and carcinogens is via ordinary household cleaning products? Although household cleansers seem innocuous, many of them are made of potentially dangerous solvents, acids, and cancer-causing substances. If you have children or pets in your home, they are particularly vulnerable to these harsh chemicals.

If you would like to start avoiding dangerous household products, there are two routes available to you. First, you can purchase commercial organic, natural cleansers. These cleaning products are available at almost any store and are generally made of fruit juices and extracts, vinegar, baking soda, salts, herbal extracts, and other safe substances. They are generally priced at about the same price-point or slightly higher than traditional, chemical-laden cleansers.

A second possibility is that you can make your own natural cleaning products. In fact, most people find that it is easy to whip up a simple cleaning product and that it saves them up to hundreds of dollars per year. Some simple natural cleaning substances to start with are baking soda and vinegar. Add baking soda to water at a ratio of one tablespoon baking soda to three cups of water. Or, add vinegar to water at a ratio of a half cup of vinegar to four cups of water. Shake or stir until well blended and put in a clean spray bottle or apply to a clean rag.

If you want, you can make more complex cleansers that still cost only pennies per bottle. Squeeze fresh citrus juices or grate citrus zest and combine with vinegar. Or steep herbs in boiling water to make a concentrated tea that can be combined with vinegar or baking soda.

Another possibility is to use a natural soap, usually scented with lavender or peppermint and marketed as "castile soap" and dilute it in the ratio of one tablespoon of soap to several cups of water. You can use this substance to wash dishes or counters, but make sure to rinse with water after you're done so that there is no residue.
